VA Burial Benefits and Cremation Alternatives

A small way to say thank you for your sacrifice

VA Burial BenefitsVeterans are entitled to be buried or have their ashes interred in any National Cemetery provided there is available space at no charge to the veteran. This VA benefit covers only the burial plot or interment – it does not cover preservation, preparation for burial, casket, funeral service or cremation costs. The additional burial expenses can run as much as $10,000, and cremation expenses are increasing at 13% per year. In addition, available space in the National Cemeteries is limited – of the 125 national cemeteries operated by the VA, only 65 are open for new casket interments. Therefore, burial options are currently limited to these specific cemeteries. Veterans may also be eligible for a $300 reimbursement toward cremation services. The government runs these programs and benefits may change at any time.
